Energy-related GHG emissions represented around 75 % of global anthropogenic GHG emissions in 2018. They increased by 13 GtCO₂ between 1990 and 2018 (CAIT).

Global energy-related CO2 emissions are estimated to have rebounded by more than 4% in 2021 as demand for coal, oil and gas bounced back with the economy (IEA 2022).

The world still relies largely in fossil fuels as a primary source for energy production. Even though, renewable energy systems are growing, like solar and wind systems, they're still far from replacing the polluting sources.

A robust global economy, insufficient emission reductions in developed countries, and a need for increased energy use in developing countries where per capita emissions remain far below those of wealthier nations will continue to put upward pressure on CO₂ emissions.

Energy intensity is a measure that is used to assess the energy efficiency of a particular economy. It indicates how well the economy converts energy into monetary output.
